Eddie Lou Young Whatley

PONTE VEDRA BEACH, FLA. Eddie Lou Wheat Young Whatley of Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla. passed away June 4, 2009, in Jacksonville, Fla. Mrs. Whatley was born and grew up in Northport, Alabama.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Dr. J.M. Wheat and Ronda Wheat Hughes; her husbands, William A. Young and James W. Whatley; and her daughter, Melinda Young Strausser.

Mrs. Whatley attended Tuscaloosa County schools. She attended the University of Alabama and Powers School of Art and Modeling in New York. She attended the 1935 Rose Bowl as a sponsor for the Crimson Tide. While at the University she met and married William A. Young of Little Rock, Arkansas. They were married for 60 years. After Bill's death she married Jim Whatley, another former Alabama schoolmate, of Athens, Ga. She and Jim lived together in Athens, Ga. until his death. At that time she returned to Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.

She was a member of Christ Episcopal Church of Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., where she served on the Altar Guild. Over the years she was involved in many volunteer and civic organizations.

She is survived by her granddaughter, Lindsey Kristine Strausser, and son-in-law, Randy Strausser of Jacksonville, Fla.; her sister, Lois W. Cerine (Carl) of Atlanta, Ga.; her niece, Peggy R. Menning (Colby); and nephew, Joe Rice, III of Northport.

Graveside services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Tuscaloosa Memorial Park with Dr. Charles Durham officiating and Tuscaloosa Memorial Chapel Funeral Home directing.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Community Hospice Foundation, 4114 Sunbeam Rd., Jacksonville, FL 32257, or one's favorite charity.
